Abstract

Ijtihād continues not only in the rational sciences, but also in the traditional sciences. As far as the science of Ḥadīth is concerned, Ijtihād may be traced in the causes of preferences which Muḥaddithin have developed after employing their best efforts possible. As a matter of fact, if a Muḥaddith finds two or more aḥādīth mutually contradictory, and he does not find either of the Ḥadīths abrogating the other, he prefers one Ḥadīth to the other for a strong reason. These reasons are called “wujūh al-tarjīh” (the causes of preference). The study seeks to explore these preferences. It revolves around this issue as what causes were discovered by Muḥaddithin and how many they are. The writer noted that one hundred and ten wujūh were found in the literature of Ḥadīth Sciences. As many of them are illustrated with no application on narrations, in this article a few of them have been correctly applied on the narrations. This study concludes that contradictory Ḥadīth is a significant branch of Ḥadīth sciences and “wujūh al-tarjīh” is the most important part of this branch which testifies the competence of those Muḥaddithin. Moreover, these wujūh must be studied in depth to come up with a more positive conclusion concerning the Ijtihād evidence observed in the development of these reasons and of the superiority of the traditional sciences over rational sciences.
