The Principle of General Affliction and Contemporary Food and Cosmetic Products- A Research Study

Abstract

When there is such a disturbance in human society that it is not possible to follow the Islamic commandments or if it is impossible to avoid any disobedience  then by allocating and adhering to the prescribed commandments and fatwas can be used to change unspecified rulings. It is necessary to do so because it is the intention of the Shari'ah itself to preserve its spirit and its respect and to save the afflicted from hardship as much as possible. Therefore, one of the reasons given by the Shari'ah for such occasions is Umoom-e-Balwa (General Affliction).Following this, the present article describes the reality of the Umoom-e-Balwa, the ruling, the rules and regulations of the jurists, the forms and conditions of leave and the application of it in halāl food items and cosmetics. And as a result, it is understandable that if an issue becomes known and published among the people in terms of information or practices, and people are forced to adopt it, then the Shari'ah relaxes the prohibited order. Furthermore, in Umoom-e-Balwa, it is permissible to leave one's school of fiqh and adopt another school of fiqh, and to change one's opinion due to differences of opinion. In addition, many additives are now being used in the manufacturing of foods and cosmetics, which have been declared halāl on the basis of it.
