Tradition and Modernity in Islamic Thought: Contemporary and Historical Perspectives : A study of Syed Abu-ul-Aala Maududi's Thoughts
Abstract
In 19th & 20th centuries, Western colonialism overtook Muslims intellectually and physically. Muslim rulers and king had no plans for the present and the future, apart from being proud of the glorious victories and inventions of the past. Influenced by the glare of the West, the so-called enlightened Muslim elements also started persuading and doing distortions in the name of innovation and evolution in religious principles. Those who termed the practical interpretation of religious orders as extremism and stereotyping, used education and media as a weapon to spread their false ideas. In the sub-continent, on the one hand, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan reconciled with the civilization of the West and the modernists opened the door to the renewal of interpretations and on the other hand, narrow-minded traditionalists started a series of refusal to accept every new thing because of Sir Syed Ahmed khan and his companions. Alama Iqbal and Syed Abu ul Aala Moududi’s thoughts put a profound impact regarding change and modernization in the changing Muslim societies of the last two centuries. The western thinkers guide them for development and attaing better position the Muslim world should require, acknowledge and adopt predominance of Western civilization, Secularism, dominant languages and Western educational institutions cannot be avoided. In their response the Islamic revivalist movements and Philosophers always argue that for attaining the prosperity muslim ummah must return to the Quranic principles and Sunnah of the Last messanger of Allah almighty and his truthful successors.
