Abstract

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is reputed to have said:
    

The Companions, Successors and the succeeding generations
remained high alert about the authenticity of Ahadith. They left no
stone unturned to check matn and sanad both at the time of acquiring
ahadith from their shuyukh and while imparting this precious store of
knowledge to their students.
In the last half of the first and in the second centuries A.H, fitna
of forging ahadith and sanad accelerated. The scholars of hadith took
different measures to safeguard the authenticity of hadith. One of
these measures was that scholars showed determination and under
took the hard labour in compiling the details of narrators. A good
number of books on the subject under different titles appeared
subsequently.
Imam Dhahabi, a renowned scholar of hadith, compiled a number of
books in the field of hadith including the biographies of narrators.
Mizan al-I,tidal is one of the popular book which deals with the
biographies of week narrators. In the following pages effort has been
made to write about his book Mizan in the light of available sources.
May Allah accept this meager effort of the writer.
