Abstract

The concept of Tawheed-e-Asmaa wa Sifaat or the oneness of Allah in his names and attributes is one of the most important categories of Tawheed. We can't worship Allah in a true sense without having a deep understanding of the names and attributes of Allah. Knowing the names and attributes of Allah enables us to worship him more efficiently. There are many theological discourses related to the names of Allah in classical Islamic tradition. Imam Bukhari, the author of Sahih Bukhari in his book discussed some of the important discourses related to Allah’s names and refuted the misguided approaches in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Some groups of Muslims like Jahmiyya claimed that the names of Allah are creations and these names are separate from Allah, and Muattila claimed that names lack meanings. Imam Bukhari refuted these views, providing Quranic and Sunnah-based arguments that the names of Allah are not creations and carry profound meanings, as described by Allah and His Prophet. In this article other theological discourses like whether names are divine or based on Aqal, whether they are countable or countless, and whether multiple names are against monotheism. Finally, the article draws general conclusions derived from the discourse on the names of Allah.
