Abstract

Al-Burhān fī ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān by Imām Zarkashī (d. 794 A.H.) is the foremost trend setting book of the Qur’ānic Sciences in which the topics of the subject have been arranged systematically. Since the midst of second century Hijrah, before Al-Burhān, various books had been written on different topics of the Qur’ānic Sciences, for instance, Al-Wujūh wa al-Naẓā’ir fi al-Qur’ān al-Karīm by Muqātil (d. 150 A.H.), Ma‘ānī al-Qur’ān by Al-Farrā’ (d. 207 A.H.), Majāz al-Qur’ān by Abū ‘Ubaidah (d. 210 A.H.), Tafsīr Gharīb al-Qur’ān by Ibn Qutaibah (d. 267 A.H.) etc. Since Fourth Century Hijrah, the trend of writing books with the title ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān incepted, but they all were the Qur’ānic Commentaries, out of which some are referred in other books and some are present in the form of manuscripts. The very first book, representing the subject science, is Ibn Jawzī’s Funūn al-Afnān fī ‘Uyūni ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān. It is a booklet composed of twelve topics and has been compiled in context of various narrations and traditions. Imām Ibn Jawzī did not discuss any of the topics in a systematic way. After Funūn al-Afnān, two other books were available; one is Jamāl al-Qurrā’ by ‘Allāmah Sakhāwī (d. 643 A.H.) and the other is Al-Murshad al-Wajīz by Abū Shāmah al-Maqdisī (d. 665 A.H.). Both the books can neither be considered as compendious volumes of the Qur’ānic Sciences nor do they exhibit systematic method of explanation. Hence, Al-Burhān is the primary book compiled in the light of hundreds other books on the subject in which those topics of the Qur’ānic Sciences and that systematic methodology have been introduced which is a resultant of Imām Zarkashī’s diligent insight. This methodology can be observed now and then throughout the book e.g. In the topics of Cause of Revelation, Homonyms and Synonyms, Science of Anonymities, Obscure Words of the Qur’ān and the lengthiest topic Qur’ānic Methodologies etc. The systematic methodology of Al-Burhān became so popular that almost all the books written afterwards followed the same pattern as it can be seen in Al-Itqān and Al-Ziyādah wa al-Iḥsān. In this article, the systematic methodology of Al-Burhān in establishing the Qur’ānic Sciences has been opted for discussion.
