The Use of Hurūf al-ma‘ānī and their Impact on Translation and Interpretation of the Holy Qur’ān
Abstract
The study of ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī (meaningful particles) is an important aspect of the Arabic language. Ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī refer to particles that inform about the meanings of something other than themselves. Acknowledging the significance of these particles, the classical scholars of grammar, hermeneutics, and jurisprudence discussed them in their works. In Arabic, ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī are employed to convey different meanings according to the context. This lends them new meanings. Due to the importance of these particles, the scholars of the Qur’ānic sciences necessitated the knowledge of their proper usage for a Qur’ānic commentator in addition to other sciences (like the Qur’ānic sciences, ḥadīth sciences, jurisprudence, the knowledge of the abrogating and abrogated verses, and the Arabic language) so that they could interpret the Qur’ān according to the context. In the modern period, the knowledge of these ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī is compulsory to interpret the Qur’ān correctly and avoid errors. This study aims to explain the meanings of ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī and their impact on the Qur’ānic exegesis. It is an analytical study, which relies on the classical and modern sources of grammar, Qur’ānic sciences, and jurisprudence. The knowledge of these ḥurūf al-ma‘ānī and their impact on the Qur’ānic exegesis is required in modern times.
