Foreign Language of the Qur’ān; Imām Ibn Jarīr Ṭabarī’s Fundamental Verdict and Method of Inference

Abstract

Foreign Language of the Qur’ān is an important topic of the Qur’ānic Sciences in which it is discussed that whether the Qur’ān contains some foreign words in it other than Arabic which are originally not Arabic, but they have become a part of Arabic due to their frequent usage in the Arab. The presence of foreign words on the Qur’ān is a controversial topic about which several scholars, lexicologists and exegetes have variant opinions. Imām Ibn Jarīr Ṭabarī holds a distinctive opinion in this regard. He discussed it in the detailed preface of his outstanding Qur’ānic Commentary, Jāmi‘ al-Bayān an Tāwīl Āy al- Qur’ān and explained his fundamental verdict through transmitted as well as rationalistic proofs in a well-organized manner. In this article, Imām Ibn Jarīr Ṭabarī’s fundamental verdict and method of inference have been elaborated.
