Center of Thinking, Human Heart or Brain: Introduction and analysis

Abstract

This article is trying to explore whether the center of thinking in the human body is the heart or brain. According to Holy Quran, Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and a majority of Islamic theologians, the center of thinking is the heart in the human body. This can be substantiated based on a large number of Quranic verses & Hadiths where it has been mentioned that the heart is the center of thinking in the human body. On the other hand, modern psychologists and medical scientists along with a few contemporary Islamic theologians including Abul Ala Maududi & Javed Ahmed Ghamdi are of the view that the brain controls thinking in the human body.  They say that the heart has no function except pumping and circulating blood in the human body. It is the human brain actually that controls thinking in the human body. If both views are comparatively analyzed, it can be concluded that both heart & brain have the functions of thinking but in different fields. The human brain controls thinking related to the needs of the physical body while the human heart controls thinking related to the soul, spirituality, divine guidance & direction to the right path (Hidayat).
