Abstract

Word’s usage has two types based on its meaning:

  • Haqeeqat (Literal) 2- Majaz (Phrasal)

Literal Usage is sub-divided into three types based on its originator:

  1. Haqeeqat-e-Lughvi (usage by language founders who originally devise the dictionary word)
  2. Haqeeqat-e-Sharia (usage by religious authority who gives a definitive meaning to the word)
  3. Haqeeqat-e-Urfia (usage by experts of different disciplines who use the word in their specialized context)

Mautizila have a particular opinion regarding how Haqeeqat-e-Sharia comes into being. According to them, when a religious authority specifies the religious meaning for a dictionary word, the word is reborn. Thereafter, its original dictionary meaning will cease to exist. The word will always be associated with the religious meaning, whatever the context. This will hold whether the word relates to a religious tenet (like iman, kufr, fisq etc.) or a religious act (like salah, saum, zakah etc.). Contrarily, scholastic majority opines that only the words pertaining to religious acts are exclusively transitioned to the religious meaning and the dictionary meaning is abandoned. However, those pertaining to religious tenets retain the dictionary meaning along with the religious meaning. Manzilatu-banul-Manzilataen, one of Mautizila’s five religious’ principles, is based on the above difference of opinion.
