Sharia and Scientific Standards of Qalb-e-Mahiat (Istihala) Metamorphism

Abstract

A change of the form, appearance, nature or character of a thing into a completely different one is called Qalb- e- Mahiat. With this perspective, present article studies a different types, sharia and scientific standards, causes and various authentic examples of  Qalb-e - Mahiat. Besides, scientific methods like filtration, chemical reaction and jurists’ opinion also have been discussed in detail. This study finds that when a change in anything up to maximum level happens (whether using any method) we consider it Qalb-e-Mahiat and  previous sharia status of a thing will also change. Further, using scientific methods the final decision for the permissibility of a thing depends upon the opinion of jurists’ rather than scientists. And customary practice (Umoom-e-Balwa) will also be analyzed in the process of Qalb-e-Mahiat to elaborate the lawfulness and unlawfulness of routine life things and edibles.
