Trends of Dresses in Arab before Advent of Islam and Stance of Sunah Thereof

Abstract

Dress is basic need of mankind. Before advent of Islam Like other civilized societies, Arabs also used different kinds of dresses. In this research I discussed dressing trends of ‘’Asr-e-jahli’’ (before advent of Islam) and ‘’Ahde Islam’’ (Sunnah of Holy prophet PBUH). Small industry of cloth making was in some areas of Arab and they also used to import dresses from Yemen, Syria and Qatar. All dresses had different names according to their design, color and area. I have tried to present the trends of ‘’Asr-e-jahli’’ and Hazrat Muhammad’s   way of reformation side by side. It has three dimensions. He did not completely change the traditions of Arabs by constructing new building of religion but the Holy Prophet PBUH maintained the traditions which were according to the teachings of Islam. He reformed all those traditions which required corrections. He blessed prestigious principles to mankind by eliminating cursed traditions. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) brings revolution in this aspect also. He rejected those dresses which were against nature of Islam like use of silk (RESHAM) for male. Some dresses were amended. He appreciated those dresses which were according to the Islamic teachings. Holy Prophet (PBUH) commanded special code of dress being a last messenger of ALLAH.
