British Imperialism in Subcontinent and the Illumination of Christianity: Research Based Study
Abstract
Christianity is the ancient religion of the inhabitants of Sub-Continent but it is very hard to determine when did this religion enter the Indian Sub-Contint. There are some historical sources which indicate the arrival of the Jesus and the Holy Marry in India but this is again a hard reality to prove. Some of the Christian historians have expressed their views about the arrival of the two close companions, Bartalmai and Thoma, of the Christ in India. But all the Christian historians do not verify these historical tales. The historical fact cannot be ignored that the Christianity reached to its climax during the European dominance in India. The Portagise, the Dutch, the French and the British traders reached India. These European nations fought a long war of dominance in which the British became glorious. The European nations, especially the British played a key role in the promotion and spread of the Christianity in India. In 1857, the British defeated the long rule of the Mughals in India and became the all-powerful rulers over here. The missionary institutions were established, the free Christian education was provided and the priests were given total freedom for their religious activities. They were trained for polemical discourses. The newspapers and religious magazines were provided door to door. The British Government took over the orphan houses to convert the orphans and the parentless children into Christians. They tried their level best to spread Christianity all over India through hook or crook. This research article has been presented to highlight and assess the role of the British imperialism in promoting and spreading Christianity in the Sub-Continent of India.
