Abstract
Muslim jurists of various schools of Islamic law differ from each other over the interpretation of almost all the Qur’anic legal verses. This consequently led to confusion over most of the fundamental Islamic issues. As regards commentators of the Qur’an, such as al-Kiya al-Harrasi al-Shafi‘i, Abu Bakr Ibn al-Arabi al-Maliki, and Abu Bakr al-Jassas al-Hanafi, they have generally interpreted the Qur’anic legal verses in accordance with their respective schools of law. This paper represents a humble attempt to explain the differences of the above three commentators over the meaning of the verse on the punishment of adultery as available in Surat al-Nur, with a critical overtones from both the Qur’anic and rational angles. The methodology applied in this discussion based on the Qur’an, Sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.w.) and the views of Muslim scholars is analytical.
