The Place of Due in the Agricultural Market in Islamic Perspective

Abstract

Islam as religion has predominance over other religions of the world. One of the reasons for this predominance is the feature of Islam according to which Islam provides complete guidance for every aspect of life, present or future.  The issue of economy, whether on individual or state level, has always been an important part of life. Both the economic systems— capitalism and communism— have failed to address the economic ills of human life. One of the important aspects of economy is sale and purchase of tradeable goods. Marketing of particularly goods in a capitalistic society reeks of exploitative practices.   Islam provides a system of marketing which attempts to promote fair profitability within permissible and legitimate parameters. It attempts to circumvent the unbridled greed which has overwhelmed modern man resulting in grave imbalance in society. The capitalistic marketing system has given rise to exploitative marketing practices resulting in constantly increasing cleavage between the rich and the poor. One of the worst affected section, on account of such practices, is rural peasantry who are finding it hard to receive fair price for their agricultural produce and finding no viable solution to their perennial poverty are undertaking urban migration. This influx of agrarian populace to urban centres is adding to the fragile state of already overstretched resources of urban life.  In this article, an attempt has been made to review and explore the issue in the light of Islamic teachings. Particular focus here is on a prevalent marketing practice locally referred to as ‘’due’’. KRYWORDS: religion, economy, capitalism, communism, marketing, capitalistic, agrarian, due.
