Abstract

The command over the classical Arabic language is very important for understanding the Quran. But total dependency on lexical sources in the interpretation of the Quran keeps one away from the real meanings of the Quran.  In this paper the principles of lexical interpretation of Quran affirmed by primitive theologians has been elaborated and it has been analyzed that only the lexical source is not sufficient to understand the real meanings of Quranic words neglecting the traditional sources of tafseer like the Sunnah of Holy Prophet, events surrounding Revelation (asbaab al-nuzul) and explanation of the companions (sahabah). The view of modern rationalists that the real meanings of Quran may only be understood by tool of Arabic lexicography has been analyzed and inefficiency of lexicography   as compare to orthodox sources has been explained with various examples from the Quranic verses.
