Abstract

According to the Article number 62 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the eligibility criteria for the member of the parliament include the condition of Amānah (integrity). The following article discusses a number of questions: what is the meaning of Amīn (trust worthy individual) in the view of Qur’ān and Sunnah; where in the Qur’ān the condition of Amānah is applied; what are the different types and implications of Amānah in the context of Sharī‘ah, status and property; what guidance do we get in this regard from the Islamic scholarship; and how the Prophetic tradition seeks to penalize the perpetrator who fails to uphold the value of Amānah in the aforementioned aspects?
