IMPACT OF SOCIAL DISPARITY ON ACADEMIC RESULTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A STUDY CONDUCTED AT SECONDARY LEVEL

Abstract

No one can deny the existence of social disparity in different societies all over the world. Everyone not only knows it but also acknowledges it. The way of living, aspirations, thinking, eating habits, education, manners and attitude are all affected by social disparity. The purpose of this study is to pinpoint the existence of social disparity and its relationship with learning of English by the learner of secondary level in Pakistan. For the present study empirical mode of study is found suitable. The population consists of students studying at secondary level of Lodhran a district of Southern Punjab .Learner were divided into two categories such as learner from urban or facilitated area and learners from rural or less facilitated area. Questionnaire was developed as data collection tool for the learner of English of secondary level. The responses of the targeted population were taken by using the above mentioned questionnaire. The analysis of the data reveals that academic performance of the learner is directly and indirectly effected by different social factors i.e. location of residential area ,choice of educational institution, education level of parents both father and mother, Parents occupation, help and care by the parents, family income and extra coaching from the tutor. All the above mentioned factors are held responsible in creating the gulf in the overall result of students in English. However the findings and recommendations of this study will try to abridge gap of various groups of society as regards to the learning of English at secondary level.
